A brief history—50+ years

Deutshe Missionsgemeinde

 

April 1953—German-speaking Pentecostal meetings begin—Rev. Julius Rachinski

 

October 12, 1953 —official founding of church

 

July 1954—purchase of church hall on Fraser Street

 

March 1957—Rev. Gustav Kurtz becomes pastor

 

1959 a new building is constructed on 33rd Avenue

 

Bethel Pfinsgstgemeinde

 

Church grows from 46 people to over 100 people

 

In August 1965 Rev. Gustav Kurtz resigns

 

Rev. Horst Golbeck becomes the new pastor

 

Two additional city lots are purchased for the purpose of parking and building extensions.

 

In 1970 a new church plant is started in Surrey

 

In June 1971, Rev. Horst Golbeck resigns

 

In July 1971, Rev. Eduard Nerling becomes the next pastor

 

In 1973 church building is enlarged, renovated and an attached parsonage is built

 

In May 1977, Rev. Nerling resigns

 

Bethel Pentecostal Church

 

In 1977 Rev. Gordon Rattai becomes the next pastor

 

 

 

The transition from German services to English service is made to facilitate community outreach.

 

 

 

In May 1983 Rev. Rattai resigns

 

 

 

In October 1983 Rev. Arnold Kowalski becomes the next pastor

 

 

 

People of many different nationalities and ethnic groups begin to make this their church home

 

In 1988 an educational wing is added to the building.

International Christian Centre

 

 

Several Singaporean Christians came together in October 1989 to form a congregation called Asian Christian Assembly under the direction of Rev. Eu Yat Wan (1989-1991) who was sent from Trinty Christian Centre to plant a church in Vancouver .

 

In February 1992 Rev. Kowalski resigns

In July 1992 Rev. Wally Hirch becomes the new pastor

 

Rev. Dominic Yeo (1993-1995)

 

Several ethnic congregations make use of the church building in an effort to become intentionally multicultural.

 

Rev. Rainer Mittelstaedt becomes pastor in June 1995.

In May 1996 Rev. Hirch resigns

 

 

In November 1996 Rev. Len Mittelstaedt becomes the new pastor

 

 

In December 2000, joint services begin.

 

In April 2001, the two congregations officially merged under the name of
Bethel International Church

 

Bethel International Church

Pastor Len Mittelstaedt and Pastor Rainer Mittelstaedt share the pastoral duties.

In January 2002 Pastor Len resigns to complete theological studies at Regent College and later goes to Tanzania as missionary. Pastor Rainer assumes full pastoral responsibilities.

In October 2004 a Global Leadership Network team comes from Trinity Christian Centre to hold a seminar to train the leadership in the GLN model of the cell-based church.
